PASSENGER VEHICLES

To obtain a licence to operate a passenger vehicle in NS, there are 3 stages: Class 7(Learner); Class 5N (Newly Licensed Driver); Class 5R (Restricted Individual); and, Class 5 (Experienced driver).

NOVICE LICENCE:
EXIT REQUIREMENTS
Time completion: Hold a Class 5N licence for 2 years
See SUSPENSION & PROHIBITION section below
Successfully passed test ⁄ course: 6 hour Defensive Driving course or complete the full Driver Training Course (25 hours theory, 10 hours driving time)
AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry age: 16 years
Minimum exit age
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Parental consent
Successfully passed test  ⁄ course: Class 5 road test
Time completion: Held a Class 7 licence for 7 months, or 5 if a driver education course was completed
STAGE DURATION
Minimum duration: 2 years
Maximum holding period
SUPERVISED DRIVING
Night Driving: Must have a supervisory driver IF driving at night and DO NOT have an exemption for employment purposes.
DRIVING RESTRICTIONS AND CONDITIONS
BAC level while driving: 0.0 BAC
Must display "N" sign⁄plate when driving
Night driving: No driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m.; learners can apply for an exemption from the night time driving curfew for employment purposes, and if granted, the driver must take the most direct route to and from work, and is not permitted to have any passengers in the vehicle
Other restrictions
Passenger restrictions: Only one front seat passenger; rear passengers limited to the number of available seat belts
Road restrictions
SUSPENSION & PROHIBITION
Licence suspensions will delay graduation to the regular driver stage by 2 years from the date the licence is reinstated
Lower driver penalty point threshold: 6 instead of 12; if Learner drivers get 6+ demerit points, their licence will be suspended for 6 months
Must be suspension-free for 24 consecutive months to graduate to a Restricted Individual Class 5R licence

No upgrade to Classes 1-4 while in Novice stage
