DRIVING RESTRICTIONS AND CONDITIONS

SUSPENSION & PROHIBITION
![]() Lower driver penalty point threshold: Licence suspensions are issued at 6 demerit points (instead of 12) accumulated over two years; the suspension periods are: 2 months for 1st offence; 4 months for 2nd offence; and 6 months for 3rd offence ![]() Violation of the zero BAC limit: Roadside suspensions issued by the police for exceeding 0 mg% BAC, begin immediately upon issuance of the notice by the officer; two suspensions will require the Novice Driver to complete an Alcohol Education Program; three or more suspensions will require the Novice Driver to undergo an alcohol dependency evaluation/treatment program
DRIVER IMPROVEMENT ACTIONS
![]() If demerit points are accumulated, the Novice Driver must complete a demerit points "Responsible Drivers Workshop" reinstatement course; if the Novice Driver has not reached suspension level, a points reduction course will permit the removal of up to four (4) points every five (5) years ![]() A suspension requires the Novice Driver to re-start at the level attained, however, credit is permitted for tests or education courses previously taken
ADDITIONAL CLASS 5 LEVEL I FEATURES
![]() If the driver is a 16 year old driver presenting a valid driver's licence from another jurisdiction which has a graduated driver licensing program, they will be placed in Class 5, Level I. If they have taken an approved driver education course, they will be given a 4 month credit and upon reaching 16 years 8 months, will receive a Class 5, Level II driver's licence. If they have not taken a driver education course they will remain at Level I until their 17th birthday, at which time they will graduate to a Class 5, Level II licence. A road test is not required since they would have already passed a road test in another jurisdiction. ![]() No upgrade to commercial class driver licence ![]() Other licensed drivers taking up residence in the province will have their experience rated against the Newfoundland system and will be placed in the appropriate phase; age, driving experience and class of licence currently held will determine placement CONTACT INFORMATION
