PASSENGER VEHICLES MOTORCYCLES

To obtain a motorcycle licence in ON (Class M1) individuals must enter Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS) and complete both Class M1 and Class M2 license phases.

Individuals may also attain M2 and M licenses with a limited-speed (L) condition by completing M1 and M2 road-tests on a limited-speed motorcycle or moped.

AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry age: 16 years and two months
Minimum exit age: 18 years (17years and 8 months if approved motorcycle safety course is successfully completed)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Driver education: Voluntary
Parental consent
Successfully passed test  ⁄ course: Ministry's M1 road test or an approved motorcycle safety crouse that includes a M1 road test
Time completion: Held a M1 licence for 60 days
EXIT REQUIREMENTS
Successfully passed test ⁄ course: Ministry's M2 road test after holding M2 license for 22 months (or 18 months if an approved safety course is successfully completed)
Time completion: Ministry's M2 road test after holding M2 license for 22 months (or 18 months if an approved safety course is successfully completed)
STAGE DURATION
Minimum duration: Hold an M2 license for 22 months (or 18 if an approved safety course is successfully completed)
Maximum holding period: M2 license is valid for 5 years

ADDITIONAL CLASS M2 FEATURES
Class M2 and Class M licence holders may also drive Class G vehicles under the conditions that apply to a Class G1 licence holder
With a Class M2 licence, the operator can drive a moped, limited-speed motorcycle and a motorcycle
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Effective August 1, 2010, all drivers under 22 years of age, regardless of their class of licence (including those who have completed GLS), must maintain a zero blood alcohol concentration level when driving. This is similar to the 0 BAC licence condition that already applies to novice drivers in GLS. Penalties for non-compliance are as follows:

Young Drivers (under 22 years of age)

> immediate 24-hour licence suspension at roadside
> upon conviction, a fine of $60 to $500 and a 30-day licence suspension

Novice Drivers

> immediate 24-hour licence suspension at roadside
> upon conviction, a fine of $60 to $500 and a licence suspension as per the Novice Driver Escalating Sanction program, which may include cancellation of the M1/M2 licence
