PASSENGER VEHICLES MOTORCYCLES

To obtain a licence to operate a passenger vehicle in NB, there are two stages to the GDL program: Class 7 - Level 1 (Learner); and Class 7 - Level 2 (Novice).
First effective date of program implementation: January 1, 1996
Program update implemented: June 1, 2009


AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry age: 16 years, 8 months
Minimum exit age: 18 years
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Parental consent: If driver is under 18 years of age
Successfully passed test  ⁄ course: Class 7 - Level 1 road test
Time completion: See Minimum duration section for Class 7 – Level I
EXIT REQUIREMENTS
Successfully passed test ⁄ course

STAGE DURATION
Minimum duration: 12 months (16 months if driver has successfully completed driver training course and entered Level 2 after 8 months)**
Maximum holding period: 16 months
SUPERVISORY DRIVER

BAC level while supervising: Not exceeding 0.08
Driver log
Licence held: Fully licensed
Location while supervising: Seated in the passenger seat beside the driver and in a position to give assistance and advice
Time Licensed: Minimum 3 years
SUPERVISED DRIVING
Only for driving during night restriction

** Learner’s licence without interruption for previous 24 months with at least 12 months in level 2 to advance in Class 5

² If under 21, prohibited from driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed driver (Class 5 or better) with at least 3 years driving experience. No other passengers are permitted.
• Automatic exemption granted for work and education
• Written application to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles required for other purposeful activities to obtain exemption
