Minimum total number of hours: 30 hours of mandatory training through High School Driver Education Program; or 6 hours from a licensed driving instructor

Number of sessions: Varies with each high school; some schools may administer the program throughout the whole school year (September to June), some may do the program over a semester, some may do the program in six weeks; schedules are determined to fit the needs of the students, school and educator. The commercial program has 6 hours in-class. Some educators teach all 6 hours in one day, three 2-hour sessions, two 3-hour sessions, or six 1-hour sessions.

INSTRUCTOR REGULATIONS (IN-CLASS)

• Have held a class 5 licence or higher for the immediate preceding five years and provide proof of passing all necessary Class 4 examinations within 30 days prior to date of application.

Additional vehicle requirements: Vehicle must have special rearview mirrors firmly affixed to the vehicle to allow a driving instructor a clear and unobstructed view of the highway to the rear of the vehicle

Required insurance: A certificate of bodily injury and property damage liability insurance on motor vehicles while used in driving instruction, insuring the liability of the driver training school, the driver instructors and any person taking instruction, in the amount of at least $2,000,000 in excess of the amount required pursuant to The Automobile Accident Insurance Act for bodily injury or death and damage to property, in any one accident.

Vehicle class used: Class 5

Vehicle signage: Vehicle must display a sign at the rear of the vehicle that is conspicuously and clearly visible from a distance of 30m, and contains the words “Student Driver” in letters not less than 5cm in height.

INSTRUCTOR REGULATIONS (IN-VEHICLE)

Additional regulations: Must be employed by a driving school, must submit a current medical examination report to SGI.

Certifications⁄designations: Holds a driving instructor's certificate; educators must pass a Class 5 Instructor Course at SGI.

Driver ⁄ criminal record check: Have an acceptable driving record; Applicants applying for a driver instructor’s certificate must include a criminal record search, on a form provided by the administrator, signed by the Chief of Police or the Officer in Charge of the local R.C.M.P. detachment or the Town Constable.

Licence held: Hold a Class 4 driver licence (minimum)

Location in vehicle while instructing: Front passenger seat with no one between instructor and student

Minimum driving experience: Have held a class 5 licence or higher for the immediate preceding five years and provide proof of passing all necessary Class 4 examinations within 30 days prior to date of application.
