PASSENGER VEHICLES MOTORCYCLES

To obtain a licence to operate a passenger vehicle in NB, there are two stages to the GDL program: Class 7 - Level 1 (Learner); and Class 7 - Level 2 (Novice).
First effective date of program implementation: January 1, 1996
Program update implemented: June 1, 2009


AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry age: 16 years
Minimum exit age: 16 years, 8 months
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Driver education: Voluntary
Knowledge test
Parental consent: If driver is under 18 years of age
Vision test
EXIT REQUIREMENTS
Successfully passed test ⁄ course: Class 7 – Level 1 road test
Time completion: See Minimum duration section below
STAGE DURATION
Minimum duration: 12 months (can be reduced to 8 months if an approved driver education course is passed)**

SUPERVISORY DRIVER
Age
BAC level while supervising: Not exceeding 0.08
Driver log
Licence held: Fully licensed
Location while supervising: Seated in the passenger seat beside the driver and in a position to give assistance and advice
Time Licensed: Minimum 3 years
SUPERVISED DRIVING
Minimum amount of supervised driving: No specified number of hours unless the Class 7 – Level 1 driver has completed a driver education course, in which case they would have a minimum of 10 hours of supervised driving

BAC level while driving: 0.0 BAC
Display "L" sign⁄plate when driving

Other restrictions
Passenger restrictions: No passengers permitted except for one fully licensed driver, who is seated in the front passenger seat
Road restrictions
SUSPENSION & PROHIBITION
If the driver in the GDL program is suspended for a period of 3 months or greater, the suspension is followed by a return to the beginning of the GDL period with no credit given for previously passed tests or driver training actions
Lower driver penalty point threshold: Drivers start with 4 points on their driving record and they receive an additional 2 points on the anniversary date of their first licence to a maximum of 10 points
