PASSENGER VEHICLES MOTORCYCLES

To obtain a licence to operate a passenger vehicle in the NWT, there are three GDL stages:
Stage 1 - Class 7 (Learner);
Stage 2 - Class 5P (Novice); and
Stage 3 - Class 5 (full licence).
Effective date of program implementation: June 1, 2005


AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum entry age: 15 years
Minimum exit age: 16 years
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Driver education: Voluntary
Knowledge test
Parental consent
Vision test
EXIT REQUIREMENTS
Successfully passed test ⁄ course: Practical road examination
Time completion: Hold a Class 7 licence for 12 months suspension free
STAGE DURATION
Minimum duration: 12 months
Maximum holding period
SUPERVISORY DRIVER
Age: 18+ years old
BAC level while supervising: The instructor must have no alcohol or drugs in system
Licence held: Full Class 1-5
Location while supervising: In front passenger seat
Time Licensed: At least 2 years
SUPERVISED DRIVING
Minimum amount of supervised driving
DRIVING RESTRICTIONS AND CONDITIONS
BAC level while driving: 0.0 BAC
Night driving: Not permitted to drive between 11p.m. and 6a.m.
Passenger restrictions: A Learner cannot have any passengers other than the supervisor
SUSPENSION & PROHIBITION
Lower demerit points: Accumulation of 6 or more demerit points, the Registrar shall suspend the driverís licence
